The Capilano University Library gives you access to databases that include collections of academic publications on a particular subject. You can search the databases to find resources (e.g., journal articles, books) on the topic of your assignment.
When you conduct a search using a database, you will get a list of results. You can click on the title of each resource to get detailed bibliographic information and an abstract. The abstract is a short summary of the entire article or book. This short video describes the main components of the results list.
If you want to read the whole article, look for a PDF icon or a button that says “full-text access.” If you want to read a book, look for the “call number” that you can use to find the printed copy of the book in the library, or look for a PDF icon or eBook link that will allow you to read an electronic version of the book.
If the book or article is not available for free through the Capilano University Library, you can still get the article for free, or borrow the book from another library, by completing the Inter-Library Loan request form.
